Rainier Avenue Radio’s award-winning technology, film and journalism program

Rainier Avenue Radio is proud of our adjoining CADMA program, a provider of community training in digital media to youth, adults and seniors across the Seattle area, including public schools, community centers, and at our computer lab.

Our team has produced and taught a broad range of curriculum to provide students the necessary skills to create their own videos, news broadcasts, websites, and on-air radio broadcasts. CADMA offers initial courses on basic computer and digital literacy, including using Microsoft and Google products. From there, CADMA offers more intensive units to develop broadcasting and journalism skills.

Students receive instruction in:

  • Communications and journalism

  • Television and radio broadcast

  • Video and film editing

  • Digital photography

  • Web design

  • Social media and blogging

  • Using digital media in business

  • Using social media for social change

CADMA operates under three guiding principles and we strive to instill these values in our students: Mutual Respect, High Achievement, Teamwork.

We have graduated over 240 students since our first class in 2014, including students at Franklin and Garfield High Schools, Asa Mercer and Washington Middle Schools, Rainier Beach Community Center, two summer cohorts in partnership with Computing Kids, and our Silver Award-winning Seattle Youth Employment Program in partnership with Amazon and Mayor Ed Murray.

CADMA is currently training middle-school students in two 2017 summer programs:

  • Code Your Future, in partnership with Computing Kids at the Northwest African American Museum

  • A summer program at Asa Mercer Middle School where one of our first graduates, Lucious Tenebris (left) has grown into an Instructor role

We look forward to continuing to train community members to become their own media content providers.

Notable CADMA Achievements

  • CADMA partnered with Washington Middle School on the innovative Connect50 program, which supplied computers and digital literacy training to African American boys and their guardians.

  • Students of our after-school program at Asa Mercer Middle School conducted and recorded an hour-long interview with Alan Cohen, the new CEO of Thrive Washington (an organization and leader in early childhood education run by Bill Gates), and spent all quarter preparing for this opportunity by learning interview principles, video and audio editing.

  • Youth CADMA students took center stage in Seattle’s National Radio Day 2016 where they planned, engineered, and conducted interviews for a live radio broadcast. Nearly a dozen local radio stations attended the event at our studios. They also composed questions and interviewed 2016 third-party presidential candidates, as well as musical guests of the radio station.

  • CADMA was selected as a service provider in 2016 for Washington Middle School's Huskies Out of School Time (HOST) program. HOST provides youth a range of academic, recreation, and enrichment programming. The HOST program is supported by Seattle Public Schools, Seattle Parks and Recreation, and Seattle's Family & Education Levy. Our group of students learned digital media principles and created a website complete with blog content, photos, and videos. They presented their work to classmates and their families at the end-of-quarter program showcase event.

  • After-school students at Asa Mercer Middle School produced a radio program segment with interviews, news reporting, and opinion journalism that was aired on RainierAvenueRadio.World.
